Hi Chrispine,

It depends on the situation. If you&#039;re coming to a stop from 5th a short distance ahead, in modern cars you should be able to block shift. Slow down in 5th gear to as slow as the car is comfortable with, press the clutch, keep on the brake and directly into 1st to stop.

If you want to go sequentially through the gears and use engine braking to slow down, you would need to bring the clutch back up after each gear downshift (not applicable to stopping a short distance ahead as mentioned above). Keeping the clutch down would be called &#039;coasting&#039; which is not good as it gives you less control of the car. Besides, there would be little point in going through all the gears from 5th to 1st if the clutch was pressed down all the time as it wouldn&#039;t do anything.]]></description>
